Juniors Match Program & Results 2010

We are now recruiting young anglers, girls and boys between the ages of 7 and 11 years,
to train to be part of our successful Cadet team. No experience is required as full training is given by our Junior Team Coach, Steve Arabskyj.
We meet every other Wednesday evening from 7pm to 9pm. In the winter months coaching is classroom based and in the spring we move on to Wakefield club waters.

We are also recruiting anglers between the ages of 11 and 17 years of age for our Junior and Intermediate teams. We meet at the club-house at Flanshaw Dam, Flanshaw Lane, Wakefield. The dam is opposite the Eagle public house on Flanshaw Lane.

Unless you have already purchased fishing tackle, we strongly advise you to ask for our advice prior to buying tackle.

West Yorkshire Police
Get Hooked on Fishing not Drugs
Junior Match Calder & Hebble Canal

Once again, West Yorkshire Police staged yet another successful Get Hooked on Fishing not Drugs or Crime fishing competition for under 18s.
Last year force Imaging Officer David Speight stepped down as organiser and his son PC Adam Speight took over.  Adam has taken part in the event from the first match in 1994 at the age of 14, when he fished the match as an U15 and in more recent years has acted as a steward.
The match went very well with most of the young anglers catching fish with a few very good weights. The conditions stayed clear.
It was good to see young people from all over West Yorkshire and from other areas such as the north east.  Most youngsters were accompanied by parents and others by their mentors from the Youth Offending teams, or other supporting adults.  Thankfully, over the years this match has proved successful in encouraging youngsters into angling as an alternative pastime to the more negative pursuits.
One such story was, told to David Speight after the match. A mother of one of the young anglers came and thanked him for running the competition: her son had been associating with the wrong crowd, was failing at school and he had already come to the notice of the local police.  The mother explained that two years ago her son had taken part in this competition.  David had put him in touch with his local junior angling club which he joined and he has not looked back since:  his mother said that he has new friends and is doing very well at school and teachers have commented on the change and said that he is no longer disruptive in class or rude to them.
Fishing the Calder and Hebble canal is never easy yet these young anglers really did do very well and overall it was a good day.
PC Speight would like to thank all our sponsors who gave so generously and helped make the match again a resounding success.
Chief Superintendant Barry South opened the presentations by welcoming everyone and thanking the competitors, sponsors and volunteers for their contribution to another successful match day.
A total of £200 was collected and donated to Martin House Hospice for Children.
