A good turnout of 20 anglers for the latest winter sweepstake on the Horbury Canal ensured that the added sponsorship prize provide by " GO OUTDOORS " of Middlestown would be hard to win but those drawn downstream of the Bingley Arms road bridge were the obvious favorites.
As the match progressed it soon became clear that anglers upstream of the bridge were not going to trouble the scalesman as most were struggling to get a bite. At peg 110 Saltaire's John Sedgwick had Roach queuing up for his bread punch bait and soon had 2lb of fish in the net, whilst Mike Sharpe on peg 108 was using the same method to take some net Roach and Skimmers on the pole at 10 metres. On the hot peg 110 C Ian Starbuck from Castleford was also using bread punch, and was netting Roach at regular intervals, but at the halfway stage the bites slowed down and prompted a change of tactics. A switch to caster on the long pole at 14 metres soon had the fish feeding again for Starbuck, who topped the leader board to take the £100-00 top prize back to Castleford.
